Modules
After completing the training, the trainees will have the skills and competence to:
1.1 Discuss malaria as a disease and it's epidemiology, and demonstrate the life cycle, transmission, treatment as well as proper measure of control and prevention
1.2 Discuss the importance of malaria as a potentially life-threatening disease
Objectives:
Apply the proper way to collect, prepare, and store good quality thick and thin blood films on the same slide
Prepare Giemsa working solution for staining of Stain blood film
Demonstrate proper preparation of blood spot for molecular confirmation
Identify the different types of malaria rapid diagnostic tests
Discuss and demonstrate the procedures in performing rapid diagnostic testing
General objective: Differentiate the human malaria parasites by demonstrating the diagnostic characteristics of Plasmodium species by microscopy
sensitivity and specificity of >80%) in confirming the presence of malaria parasites
Distinguish the malaria parasites in both thick and thin films
Demonstrate and recognize the morphological differences between the four species of human malaria by stages
Recognize the blood cell components and artifact contaminants commonly seen in the blood that were frequently mistaken as malaria parasite
