Course Schedule To be announced
Level of Difficulty Intermediate
Course Description
The online training consists of lectures on the basic theories and guidelines in relation to blood screening of TTI. Demonstration for laboratory work will be provided in lieu of hands-on laboratory work. Pre-recorded lectures and activities will be accessed by participants through the RITM Learn Learning Management System at a scheduled time while hands-on-facilitator-guided laboratory work will be done through scheduled online live sessions. The participants’ skills will be checked through provision of Proficiency Testing Panel for the participants to screen in their respective BSF.
The participants will be graded through written practical examinations and completion of the panel testing. Participants will be given a Certificate of Proficiency if they have passed a grade of 75% for their overall assessment. In case of failure, a Certificate of Attendance will be given.
NOTE: This is a course page dedicated to pre-registration ONLY. The actual training shall be in a separate course page, updates will be sent to your e-mail.
Course Topics
- Safe Blood Donation
- Infectious Agents in Blood Transfusion
- Blood Donor Screening and Confirmatory Testing Principles
- Blood Screening Policies and Testing Algorithm
- Quality Assurance in Blood Service Facilities
- Confirmatory Testing Referral System
- Basic Techniques in Malaria Microscopy
- Practical Blood Screening Cases
Rationale/Background
Medical technologists for Blood Service Facilities (BSF) are required to have a special proficiency skill in testing for HIV and other Transfusion Transmissible Infections (TTI) to ensure that blood units issued to patients are safe for transfusion.
This training (to be provided via RITM LEARN - learning management system and online live sessions) would equip medical technologists with knowledge and skill in ensuring that blood for transfusion are tested for the common TTI and released as safe for transfusion.
Objectives
At the end of this training course, each participant will be proficient in testing for HIV and other Transfusion Transmissible Infections in blood units collected from voluntary blood donors.
Specifically, at the end of the training, the participants are expected to:
- Organize proper donor selection and interview
- Enumerate the protocol for Donor Recall and HIV Counseling
- Explain the basic immunology of infection
- Discuss the transmission of infectious agents by blood transfusion
- Discuss the epidemiology and transmission of HIV
- Differentiate screening and confirmatory testing principles available for blood donor screening
- Explain the importance of setting up a testing algorithm for blood safety
- Discuss pertinent policies in relation to blood safety
- Demonstrate basic biosafety principles applicable to a serology laboratory
- Employ the principles of quality assurance and quality control in the serology laboratory
- Demonstrate proper pipetting technique
- Troubleshoot cases of potential errors in the laboratory
- Trace the referral system of RITM and SACCL samples for confirmatory
- Discuss the External Quality Assessment process and its importance
- Detect the presence of malaria parasites in a given blood smear
- Correctly perform screening tests for HIV, HBV, HCV, Syphilis and Malaria
Expected Outputs/Competencies Acquired
After the training, the participants are expected to be competent in the following:
- Performing serologic techniques for screening of TTI
- Analysis and validation of blood screening results
- Troubleshooting common errors encountered in screening of blood units
- Applying good manufacturing practices in the BSF
Evaluation Method
Written examination (theory and practical) and Panel testing (actual laboratory testing)
